しかしそれにしてもみんなiPadに不気味に、というか不安を感じている。では不安の正体は何か。それはiPadが、AppleやMicrosoftが作り上げてきたこれまでのPCの価値観をぶち壊そうとしているからだ。画面の中にカーソルがあり、それをマウスとキーボードで操作して使う、ピクセル単位の精密さを持った、無限の拡張性と自由度を持った機械。PC。「カーソル至上主義」とも言えるこのスタイルが、万能で究極だという僕らの意識こそがiPadを拒絶している。我々のPCに比べ、iPadはあまりに非力で入力方法もアバウトで、おもちゃのような代物だ。こんな奴にPCのようなまねができるはずがない、できたとしてもそれは中途半端で気持ちが悪いものだ、そう思ってしまう。

ところがアバウトで誰も困らないのだ。携帯で書こうがPCで書こうが送られるメールは一緒。iPadとは我々が行ってきた9割のPC操作を行うためのソフトウェア群をアバウトに使えるよう再設計し、アバウトなインターフェースをもつ板状の筐体に詰め込んだもの。これがiPadの真の正体だ。
